BAROCKETMAN

March 5th, 2010 Posted in Artwork, News | Add a Comment »

The not-terribly-mysterious Flash Gordon project is, of course, taking longer than I had imagined. I’m squeezing in time for it where I can and it’s certainly coming along, but I realize I can’t let it be the only art I produce, lest this blog languish and my skills grow rusty.

So here, fine ladies and gents, is a tribute to my love of wordplay. I give you, “BAROCKETMAN.”

Celebrating one month of handmade books

October 24th, 2009 Posted in Art & Design, Artwork, News | Add a Comment »

The Spruce Collection

A break from the usual programming: Monday, October 26 marks one month since Mel opened her business selling handmade sketchbooks. If you weren’t already aware of these incredibly gorgeous pieces of meticulous craftsmanship, then it’s time you checked out her store. The books are hand-bound and made with soft genuine leather and paper of the highest quality.

To celebrate one month of open store doors, we cooked a delicious dinner of garlic mashed potatoes and pork tenderloin with cranberry, almond and sage sauce, topped off with locally made sparkling apple cider. Delish!

One month dinner!

Covered, Round 3

August 20th, 2009 Posted in Artwork, News | Add a Comment »

This week I was once again featured on Robert Goodin’s Covered Blog. This go round, I reworked Green Lantern #122 from 1979, original cover by Dick Giordano. You can see the post on Covered, or right here. First up is my cover, followed by Giordano’s original from 30 years ago. Hope you enjoy!

SHAZAM!

July 8th, 2009 Posted in Artwork, News | 3 Comments »

Here’s the finished version of the sketch I posted a couple days ago. Feels good to take something to final!

In other news, I recently completed a new piece for the Covered that will be featured there on August 20th. Make sure to add that fantastic blog to your roll, people. Robert Goodin does a great job over there.

From the sketchbook: Clayface vs. Batman

June 24th, 2009 Posted in News, sketchbook | 2 Comments »

Hello, fair readers! Here I am, attempting to resurrect the blog after months of neglect. I was busy looking for a place, then securing it, getting a job, moving about 6 carloads of stuff between Baltimore and Boston sans truck, starting said job, and finally settling in. Now my scanner is back in action, all hooked up and ready to roll!

To start things off, here’s a sketch from about a week ago. I have a big backlog of sketches to upload, and frankly, that’s likely what this blog is going to be for a while as I learn how to balance 9-5 with personal art time. I love my job at Vistaprint and certainly don’t want to marginalize it, and at the same time, I don’t want to stop producing personal work! So without further ado, Clayface enveloping Batman!

Covered!

May 20th, 2009 Posted in Artwork, News | 2 Comments »

So as of about 7 minutes ago (no, I didn’t sit refreshing my browser over and over…who does that?), I have another piece featured on Robert Goodin’s Covered. This time around it’s a Justice League of America cover from 1966 featuring the Shaggy Man. I had a lot of fun putting this together, and I’m feeling good about the direction of this style. Here’s the piece, though I recommend you head over to Covered to see it larger, as well as to see all the other fantastic submissions.

Now that I’m in the unpacking stage of my move to Boston, you can expect some more work up here soon, at least sketchbook pages.

Home sweet home

May 19th, 2009 Posted in News | Add a Comment »

So here I am, lying in bed in my sweet new place outside Boston with my lovely lady. It’s our first day at the place together. I came up here about a week ago to start my new job at Vistaprint, where I am now a Production Artist working in email marketing! I returned to Baltimore for a couple days to get the last of my things and to celebrate the graduation of MICA’s Class of 2009 (starring up and coming and ridiculously talented artists like Mel Chao and Sam Bosma). Please join me in congratulating this year’s class of illustrators, designers, painters, sculptors, and the like. I was thrilled to see people I taught, directed, and befriended make this important milestone.

With that in mind, I can’t help but note that yesterday’s commencement marked one year since my own graduation from MICA. It’s been a strange journey, and I feel like it’s just beginning. In the last year, I made great friends, worked hard, freelanced harder, and laid down the groundwork for great times to come. If any of you are ever in the Boston area, I ask that you drop me a line. It’s looking like I’ll be here for a good long while, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Brief update

April 5th, 2009 Posted in News | Add a Comment »

For those of you who actually follow this blog, I want to briefly apologize for the recent lack of updates. I’ve been sketching when I can, but on the whole, I’ve been super busy with the move from Baltimore to Boston. I have found an apartment and signed a lease, and am in the process of interviewing for work, so that’s all great! I appreciate every connection and tip that folks sent my way.

Updates will be slim for the next couple months, but I hope to come back full force in June.

Until then, excelsior, may the force be with you, and other geeky farewells!
